Birds January/February 2020

In Red room the children have developed an interest in Birds after observing them in the garden and watching them land on the bird table. The children wanted to give them some food so they asked the kitchen for some bread and we also used any toast that was left in the classroom. The children learnt that the birds need the toast broken down into small pieces so that they can eat it.

We then talked about the different birds they may find in the garden and learnt the names of those birds by looking through non fiction information books. This lead on to discussions about the different colours of birds

The children spotted a nest in the tree outside (this was also something they had seen in the information books)and this led on to a discussion about where birds sleep. They used their woodwork skills to create wooden boxes which they filled with old grass and some leaves and sticks from the garden to make bird's nests. Indoors the children used Google Search on the Ipads to find out what different birds look like and then used the clay to create their own birds. They have learnt how to manipulate the clay into different shapes and clay tools to cut and squeeze the clay. For some children this was a new experience and it has helped them to grow in confidence and develop their creative skills.

P.E.

The children in Red Room really enjoy physical activities both indoors and outside. They were really excited when we introduced the large P.E. equipment and have been practising their balancing and climbing skills.

Mark making, DRAWING and writing

Mark making -the creation of different patterns, lines, textures and shapes -  is much more than just a scribble. It is an important step in a child’s development and the beginning of a child’s journey towards handwriting, creativity and coordination. It provides opportunities for the children to develop their physical fine motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination, to express themselves creatively and allows them to communicate their feelings through their drawings or even use their marks to tell a story!

Library

We have really enjoyed visiting the library over the last few weeks as part of our group time sessions. We have been choosing our own books from the shelves and reading them independently or with our friends. Sometimes we pick a favourite story which our Key Worker reads to us.

The Library is now open on WEDNESDAYS 8.30-9-15am, 11.15-11.30am, 12.30-12.45pm and 2.30-3.15pm for children and parents to visit and borrow books

Parachutes and kites...…. and Stickman!

As part of this activity the children had been collecting lots of sticks and this then led on to a discussion about the book 'Stickman'. We read the story in the room and children have enjoyed making their own 'Stickmen' outside.                 January 2020

Christmas Workshop

A brilliant turn out from parents who really got involved and participated in all activities provided. The parents even got involved with the singing and dancing at the end.

Great afternoon!

Rainbow Path November 2019

The children in Red room have embraced their outdoor creativity and enjoyed using the chalks to make a rainbow path. They worked collaboratively and maintained concentration on this activity for some time. Throughout the activity the children talked about their favourite colours, and also the different shapes they found on the floor.

Embracing the rain

The children in red room enjoyed making multiple use of the rain water. They enjoyed jumping and splashing, painting (mark making), using it to cook with, sweeping and filling and emptying. The rain water became a natural resource to support children's learning.

Our children love to embrace the rain

The children enjoyed fishing for numbers and letters using baubles and letter shapes

This activity helps children develop

  • number/letter recognition
  • understanding of quantity
  • hand/eye coordination
  • playing alongside each other
  • turn taking

Paint June 2019

I found a few poppy petals on the floor and floated them in the water. The children added some of their own and then found grass and stones mixing them in with the brushes and their hands.
When we ran out of paint the children asked for more but I said that since it was Friday I wasn't going to make any more up and asked if they could think of anything else they could use instead. Looking around Aizah found some soil and added it to make 'brown paint'.

Den building May 2019

lRed Room children have spent several weeks creating dens using a range of different materials and techniques. Eileen and the children began by using sticks and tarpaulin to make 'a house'. Then they invited in friends for tea!

Next Jacky and the children created a 'jungle' den with lots of string and branches.

Finally Elaine and the children made a den in the Orchard... a place to lie down and relax, read, watch the birds and have a picnic.

Then they added a Pirate Ship 'to sail away in and explore the seven seas'

Chicks  April 2019

Recently we have had eggs from the 'Living Eggs' programme in nursery and this has provided the children with opportunities to experience life cycles. growth and development - observing the eggs, the still damp newly hatched chicks, the wobbly first steps and the growth over a number of days. We have also talked about how to look after the chicks and the children have been able to hold and stroke them.

Things that go bump in the night

Simon from the Language Alive Theatre Company came in this week to tell a story called 'Things that go bump in the night', a multi-sensory programme exploring children’s fears, developing self confidence and encouraging working together through an imaginary bedtime story.
It's time for Little Bear to go to bed but Little Bear doesn't want to so Simon asks for the children's help. Can anyone think of something that Little Bear may want before he goes to sleep - a drink, a snack, a book, a cuddly toy? Simon tries everything but eventually Little Bear decides he wants Simon to tell him a 'made up' story.
So Simon and the children with the aid of a treasure map embark on an adventure where there are islands and pirates, crocodiles and gorillas, where they have to make a bridge and cross a river before finding treasure and a really scary snake! As they journey they must remember to 'Be brave, be strong and move along'.
The children really enjoyed the experience and have talked about it a lot in nursery - perhaps you could share the photos with them and ask them to tell you the story.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Spring 2019

As part of the big national RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) bird survey the children have been conducting their own bird watch and recording the number of birds they have observed!

They have been learning to recognise and name some of our local birds - Great Tit, Robin, Sparrow, Pigeon, Magpie, Seagull, Black Bird and Raven - and have counted and made a mark for each bird sighted. The children have talked about the different sizes and colours of the birds and commented on the bird song and calls they can hear outside.

They are learning to care for and consider the wildlife in our outdoor environment and have also been asking lots of questions such as why we have to feed them and why are some birds 'mean' and chase other birds away.

We have talked about the importance of feeding the birds regularly and providing clean water for the birds to drink and bathe in. The children have replaced the seeds and fat balls in the bird feeders and have been learning about size and quantity by taking it in turns to carefully put 2 small scoops of seed into the feeders.

They have learned about aspects of Health and Safety such as washing their hands in soap and water if they touch the bird feeding stand and not spilling or dropping food onto the grass as it may attract other wildlife.
