British Values

There is an expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are implicitly embedded in the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance. 

At St Thomas Centre Nursery these values are embedded in our ethos and daily practice.

Democracy

  • Children and families become part of the St Thomas Centre Community.
  • Children have active roles in decision making and planning activities. 
  • Children's voice is heard and valued.
  • Ideas and experiences are shared.
  • Parental feedback through questionnaires and listening influences decision making by staff and governors.
  • Responsibility and roles are delegated to staff and children.
  • Staff and parent representation on the governing body elected through a democratic process.
  • Opinions are expressed through reflection and staff meetings. 

Individual Liberty

  • Children have the right to choose activities and resources in the indoor and outdoor environment.
  • Open ended resources enable children to shape their learning through their own interests.
  • The uniqueness of each child is celebrated through 'Celebration Boards'.
  • Choices are offered appropriate to the age and development of each child.
  • Children are encouraged to express themselves through their interests and choices.
  • Staff and resources promote inclusion.

Mutual Respect

  • Acknowledgement that all children and adults have individual needs and are of differing ages and stages of development. 
  • Time is taken to build positive relationships,  which underpin practice,  through home visits, celebrations, and daily contact.
  • Every child is part of a family group with a key person.
  • Children are supported to understand the need to take turns and play co- operatively.
  • Appropriate support is provided sensitively and confidentially.
  • Constructive criticism can take place in a trusting environment.
  • Respect for all children, parents, carers and nursery users regardless of gender, age,  faith, culture, sexuality or disability.
  • The nursery is proud of being part of the St Thomas Centre Community, the wider locality and  the City of Birmingham.

The Rule of Law

  • St Thomas Centre Nursery has a set of policies, procedures and  rules  which all stakeholders are expected to follow.
  • There are expectations of staff and children through a behaviour policy.
  • Expectations of behaviour for all nursery users is displayed.
  • Code of conduct for staff inside and outside the centre.
  • Governors follow a code of conduct.
  • Clear rewards and sanctions are explained to children.
  • Parents are expected to support their child in attending the nursery.
  • The website , information book and newsletters clarify expectations.
  • Parents sign terms and conditions.
 

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • Respect and tolerance for different people, faiths, cultures and languages
  • Using resources, artifacts, music, display and positive images to reflect  the multicultural  and multi faith diversity of our community and Britain.
  •  Respecting and celebrating special days and festivals for children, families and staff.
  • Family pictures and experiences  shared and displayed.
  • Children and families are welcomed in their own language and through greetings boards.
  • Staff can speak languages other than English - Arabic, Kurdish, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Polish, Italian, Thai, Mandarin.
  • Kitchen has respects and caters for cultural and dietary requirements.
  • Website has a translation facility.
